Un excellent ouvrage, magnifiquement imprimé, difficile à trouver. Un travail aux USA, en couleur un road trip moderne et intense. À posséder !
Amazing book. One of the best in my collection.
Gregory Halpern consistently finds himself listed in the best new photo books etc - if you're into contemporary photo he's a well known name. I love photo books, I live for this stuff, am a big nerd about it.This book seems to have all the appropriate backing. Published by Mack (who's catalogue is one of the better collections), edited with help from the illustrious Jason Fulford (who's work, despite being a big fan of, I'm also beginning to finding stagnant) - a nice, abstract but also concretely relevant title etc. etc. It is 'cleverly' edited as a journey from desert (east) to coast (west) - so the book takes the viewer on a 'visual journey' (what book doesn't?) - not that you would really know unless you read about the book or looked at high one too many times.If you read a lot of the reviews praising this book you find a lot of reviewers trying to make sense of the premise and write a cohesive piece about how this isn't just a bunch of pictures of LA photographed in the subjective observational manner that is the core operating method of every documenting life 'art' photographer who tries to avoid documentary pretenses (I don't have a problem with this approach, but revelational it is not...and it barely was even by the time Eggleston got around to popularizing it). But it is just a bunch of pictures of LA - to me. I can still hear one of my most beloved and yet stringent photo professors reaction to a project I put up on the crit board one time - "It's pretty, but this is just a bunch pictures..what do I do with this?" - I think back about the pictures I put on the wall - thematically similar (but of course formally inferior) to Halpern's - I wonder what she would say to Zzyzx...Actually, I love the title. And I love some of the images in this book. There are some images I'd love to have on my wall even. But I don't love this as a book. I don't think it holds together very well. As a book work it feels forced. It feels like Halpern photographed this area for a few years and was just like 'well, I have 50 pics I like, time for a book!'The sequencing doesn't really hold me, and the minimal approach - no textual guidance, abstract cover - mostly uniform design despite varying content and compositions - none of this helps advance a narrative or even the sense of journey to me - I hope this fad of photo books that need text omitting it dies soon. I'm not asking you to do all of the work for me, but if you're taking out all of the text so that I can construct my own narrative, build my own feelings about the book etc and then go talk about how it is an LA book and speak about it in LA terms with LA light and LA symbolism this just doesn't compute. Don't be afraid to make your book about something and anchor it in a time or place and stand by that - unless of course when you say it is about something and then you look at the pictures you realize it fails to actually represent that...Really, what this is is Halpern going to a new place to make the normal Halpern photographs. If you like how he sees the world you'll like some of this. I like how Halpern sees the world, but this is kind of like a middling album by a band you like - maybe some flashes of a new approach but it isn't there yet. So you get some new light and some new colors and new scenery, but the ethos remains.Because the 'concept' is thin Zzyzx reads as a portfolio more than a book. A portfolio that has some spectacular images, and some that just don't hold up. If you're willing to pay the 50$ for a few good sized wonderful pictures in the pages, go for it. If you're looking for a revelation or inspiration, you may not find it here. I find it in spurts, it doesn't permeate the work.
